Use case
How reporting teams should evaluate carbon accounting platforms under ESRS, from factor lineage to assurance readiness.
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive moved sustainability disclosure into the annual report for large EU companies and for non-EU groups with substantial EU turnover. The people asking for the numbers are no longer only marketing teams: controllers, internal auditors and statutory auditors now review the same figures, and value-chain data requests travel down to suppliers that never produced an emissions inventory before. Software is bought to make that process repeatable, not to produce a one-off PDF.
The data arrives from several directions at once. Electricity and fuel consumption come from utility portals and invoices, refrigerants from facility logs, purchased goods from ERP spend, and supplier-specific factors from questionnaires that return at different times and in different units. Emission factor libraries change between versions, and scope 2 has to be shown on both a location-based and a market-based basis under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.
Most failed implementations fail on lineage rather than on features. A figure cannot be traced back to the activity data and factor version behind it, a base-year correction overwrites history, estimated values are presented as measured, or the export is a PDF that cannot be audited. When the assurance provider asks for evidence, the team rebuilds the calculation in spreadsheets.
Evaluate vendors on whether an auditor can reproduce each number, not on dashboard design. Ask for factor versioning, dual scope 2 reporting, restatement logs, ESRS E1 datapoint mapping and a machine-readable export that survives contract termination.
Datapoint coverage against ESRS E1
Ask for a mapping table showing which ESRS E1 disclosure requirements and datapoints the platform populates, which scope 1, 2 and 3 categories are covered, and which are left to spreadsheets.
Emission factor lineage
Every calculated figure should open to the factor used, its source and version, geography, year and the activity data behind it, so an auditor can reproduce the number without asking the vendor.
Scope 2 dual reporting
Check that location-based and market-based scope 2 are calculated in parallel under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, that contractual instruments are listed, and that both totals are exportable.
Restatement and change log
Test a factor or base-year correction: the platform should keep the prior reported value, the reason for change, who approved it and when, instead of silently overwriting history.
Assurance workflow
Confirm how evidence requests are handled: attached invoices, meter readings and supplier documents per datapoint, with reviewer sign-off and a log of what was accepted or rejected.
Export before you sign
Request a full export of activity data, factors, calculations and attachments in a machine-readable format, and confirm in the contract that the data can be taken after termination.
