Carbon Intensity API

Regional forecast API for Great Britain's grid carbon intensity and generation mix.

Verified 2026-10-22

Overview

The Carbon Intensity API is published by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) in partnership with EDF Europe, the University of Oxford and WWF. The site describes it as the world's first carbon intensity forecast with a regional breakdown, forecasting carbon intensity and the generation mix more than 96 hours ahead for each region in Great Britain. An OpenAPI is provided for consumers, energy companies and smart device manufacturers to schedule energy use and minimise CO2 emissions, and the site publishes the underlying data and endpoints for download and integration.

Use cases

  • Shift workloads to times of lower grid carbon intensity
  • Forecast regional carbon intensity across Great Britain
  • Build carbon-aware applications and smart devices
  • Download historical grid intensity data
